Things Are Changing & We’re The Boiling Frogs

Posted on 27 May 2010

After reading a great inspiring book called Exploiting Chaos by Jeremy Gutsche, The Founder of Trend Hunter. One of the article struck me like the Zeus’s thunderbolt. An article titled Don’t Be The Boiling Frog made a statement of how we act like a boiling frog, you must be wondering what it means.

So basically, when we put a frog inside a boiling water, she’ll jump out of the pan and pissed. But, if we put her on a water in a pan and gradually heat the water…the frog will keep swimming until she’s cooked (never realize the water is getting hotter and hotter).

Now the frog is like most of us, our nature is to be aware when we stumble upon a sudden change but we never realize a slow and gradually changing things. For example :

Most of us is like a frog inside a pan that doesn’t realize the changes until we’re cooked

  • From Pay Phone  to Cellphone
  • From Bicycle to Segway
  • From Mail to E-mail
  • From SMS to Blackberry Messenger
  • From Atomic Bomb to Biological Weapon
  • From Climate change (Global Warming)
  • From Nokia to Blackberry
  • From Typewriter to Laptop
  • From Mirc to Facebook
  • From Libary to Wikipedia
  • From Information to Google
  • From Radio to Ipod
  • Etc.

We didn’t see those things coming, did we? But we do realize or aware of when the sudden change happened, like when they first introduce a laptop or facebook or when they bring up the global warming issue on our face. We realized that but we didn’t realize the changing process of those things, that’s why most of us are the boiling frogs.

We don’t wanna be late to act like what we’re doing about the global warming issue, right??

Nowadays, we’re having conversation through Yahoo Messenger or Blackberry Messenger, heck we even held a sudden meeting on a Blackberry Group or playing a game while waiting on a plane. Back then, we use to call someone on a payphone and texting someone for a small talk that cost us a great deal of money with it.

We use to type on a typewriter, remember those days when we mistakenly typed the wrong character?? We have to edit it like cleaning up a full-of-stain bathroom and trying to make it as white as a paper. But now? We simply hit the Ctrl+Z button or just Undo the mess we’ve done and Voila, i bet most of us forgot how Microsoft Word is changing the way we do our work or how laptop make us work faster and remote.

What i’m saying is just things changing slowly and we have to see that coming or we have to bear with the consequences. We don’t wanna be late to act like what we’re doing about the global warming issue, right?? We should’ve listen to Al Gore along time ago when he made that documentary so we won’t be the boiling frog like what we are now.
